It is so poorly made that it almost seems like someone would have had to sit down and plan out every possible thing they could do to make it as crappy as possible. I was really excited about this because it seems like a great idea. Seriously, how hard could it be to makes this item. The rim of the lid has no glaze so it is all rough and bumpy. The lid also doesn't fit on the dish so it wobbles around with big gaps everywhere.The top of the lid is glazed but it appears that while the glaze was still wet, some "bits" were spilled on top. And that was just the lid! The box says that the boat has no glaze on the bottom, which is supposed to let it absorb the water below and keep everything fresh and cool. Well the boat is actually glazed on the bottom but the base is not. In fact the base is so rough I can't even put it on my counter because it would scratch it. Overall it looks like a project from a kindergarten class. Absolute garbage!

When I first got this I was presently surprised. I didn't realise that it was a 3 piece set, I was just after a butter dish that had sides and a lid not a bottom with a dome on it. This one allows you to fill the outer layer with water to keep the butter cool, but allows it to be soft enough for spreading. This would be great if you lived in a cooler climate than me (Australia), but I think you would need to fill it with ice over here as the butter is still very squishy if left out.

Another problem I encountered was that it doesn't hold a full Australian butter stick and I've got to cut it up and squish it in.

Saying all that if I lived in a cooler climate it would be great and if it fits US butter sticks then it would be really great.

I live in Arizona where it gets so hot in the summer it's not possible to leave butter on the counter because it melts. That means during 6 mos of the year we have to use cold butter out of the refrigerator. Ugh! Then I saw the Silvermark Butter Boat and bought one. I figured I had nothing to lose. Guess what... this thing really works!! I can now leave the butter on the counter and have soft (not melted) butter year round. It's truly amazing! I'm surprised any design could work in a desert environment but the butter boat keeps butter at exactly the right temperature even during the hottest days of the summer. I'm so happy with it I've been buying them as gifts for my family & friends. Concerning recent design complaints, I don't understand the objections about the lid not fitting tight or sealing. The design is fine. It doesn't need to seal. The lid sits loosely on the dish and protects the butter with no issues.
