Hario MSS-1B Review by Travis

Have had this for about a month and don't think I could have done better. I have been wanting a grinder for a while but usually buy my coffee on the go, until there wasn't a good place on the way to work. This grinder married with the Aeropress makes a great combo.

As another person pointed out, it does have an adjustable screw for grind. It's a little weird at first after you take it apart, but the notches help with finding that right spot.

Of any cons, it's that it does take a few minutes to get through a full load of beans. If you are in a hurry, or don't have time to manually grind, this isn't for you. I approached it with the mentally of earning my coffee, and I haven't regretted it yet.

Hario MSS-1B Review by Biz Markie (Tennessee)

I've had this for about a year. I went with this over the Kyocera because this one has a lid to prevent beans from flying all over the place.

As duly noted by previous reviewers, this is a very very small grinder. I can barely fit about 4 tablespoons of whole beans in the hopper. For the way I make a 32-ounce pot of French Press, I have to empty the grounds about 3-4 times. So that makes it inconvenient, but that's my fault for not getting a bigger grinder.

Another thing, and this might not be the grinder's fault. Somewhere along the line it seems that the metal rod/shaft that runs down the middle got slightly bent. Consequently, the burrs rub against each other a bit.

Otherwise it does a good job. It does make noise even though it's hand-cranked. It's hard to carry on a conversation unless you raise your voice. But compared to an electric grinder, it's way quieter. Also - I was a teeny disappointed in the consistency of the grind. Meaning, the resulting grounds are not completely uniform in size. Granted it's WAY better than my Mr. Coffee blade grinder, but I was hoping for even better uniformity.

Overall I am happy with this - it does what I wanted it to do.

Hario MSS-1B Review by Time Traveler

This is my first burr-type grinder. I bought it because I had read that coffee made in a press pot is the best, and that a grinder that produces an even grind is essential. I am the only coffee drinker at my house, so something small and hand-operated seemed ideal.

The coffee tastes great, but there is always sediment! I started with the factory setting, and increased the coarseness of the grind, thinking I would stop when I stopped getting sediment: I do understand that some experimenting is required. But now the coffee is too weak and I am STILL getting sediment. Dust and boulders, contrary to the claims. I tightened it up and am pouring the pressed coffee through a cone filter, but this is too many steps.

The quest continues.
